COLUMBUS (WCMH) — TSA officers stopped a passenger from bringing a loaded handgun packed in a carry-on bag onto an airplane at John Glenn International Airport, Sunday.
According to a release from the airport, at about 6pm, yesterday, the man was stopped at checkpoint B after a loaded Ruger LCP .380 handgun was spotted in his carry-on bag that had passed along the conveyor belt and into the X-ray machine.
Airport police were called to the checkpoint and responded to the incident.
To date, TSA officers have detected 11 firearms at John Glenn Columbus International checkpoints this year. TSA found 15 firearms at CMH last year.
Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-side case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition. Then the firearm must be taken to the airline check-in counter.
TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm on TSA.gov. Airlines may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition so travelers should contact their airline regarding firearm and ammunition carriage policies.
