Expect to be stuck in gridlock traffic if you are commuting on westbound Interstate 80 from Vallejo through Pinole and Hercules.

Right now the drive time from Crockett to the maze is 102 minutes and that is not including the drive out of Vallejo and across the Carquinez Bridge.

Late construction and two motorcycle crashes are to blame for the horrendous backup.

Two left lanes were closed on westbound 80 from Highway 24 to Richmond Pkwy. for construction that was supposed to end by 4:30 a.m. The roadwork didn’t wrap up until almost 6:00 a.m., which started the initial delays.

Then, as construction crews were packing up, two different motorcycles spun out in the area of Pinole Valley Rd., adding to the traffic jam. A third motorcycle crashed in the same spot around 8:00 a.m.

It is unclear if the motorcycle crashes are related to the construction zone.

KRON4’s Robin Winston suggests taking 780 to 680. That will take you across the Benicia Bridge, which will then give you access to highways 4 and 24. This is the “long way” around, but it will help you avoid the traffic nightmare on westbound 80.

The construction project that initially sparked the delays is an ongoing task that is expected to last until November.
