SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — All lanes of the Nimitz Freeway are now open following a fiery crash early Tuesday morning.
At 3:26 a.m., the California Highway Patrol issued a Sig-alert after a multi-vehicle collision closed the left three lanes of the northbound Interstate 880.
The accident was first reported at 3:02 a.m., said CHP officials. It happened just north of the Davis Street exit.
CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said that up to seven vehicles crashed in what may have been a set of chain reaction accidents. CHP says that the crash stated when a vehicle lost control and spun out.
One person was trapped inside a vehicle and had to be removed by first responders.
Five people were hurt in the accident. Three people declined to be taken to the hospital. The other two went; one with critical injuries, the other moderate.
CHP officials are asking drivers to use caution and expect major delays through the area.
