Traffic Alert: Doyle Drive closes for the weekend

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco’s Doyle Drive, a major artery for the Golden Gate Bridge, is closed for the weekend ahead of the long-awaited opening of the new roadway.

The extended weekend shut down began at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday and will continue through Monday, July 13th at 5:00 a.m., when the new Doyle Drive is set to open, according to project officials.

It’s the final major phase of the Presidio Parkway construction project, and will allow work crews to complete road connections and transfer traffic to the new permanent road, officials said.

During the closure, there will be no entry to the Presidio at the Gorgas Gate, and a portion of Gorgas Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic. Motorists will not be allowed to enter the work zone. They’re advised to access the area by using Lincoln Boulevard to Girard Road.

Officials say Golden Gate Bridge to Highway 1/19th Avenue will remain open, but drivers should expect major delays in the area. There will be no access to Highway 101 from Marina Boulevard or Lombard Street. The public is strongly encouraged to use buses, ferries, or the Bay Bridge.

A few hours after the new Doyle Drive opens on Monday, a celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony are scheduled to commemorate the new roadway. That event is set for 10 a.m.

The construction to the historic south access road to the Golden Gate Bridge began in 2009.
