SAN JOSE (KRON)—San Jose city officials have closed two lakes because of algae that can kill dogs.
Lake Cunningham and Almaden Lake have been shut down because of elevated levels of a type of blue-green algae called cyanobacteria.
The algae can kill dogs, but only causes skin irritation and intestinal issues in humans, health officials said.
Swimming and boating is not allowed in the lake.
Some San Jose State University classes are affected by the lake closure.
Despite the lakes being closed, the parks they are in will remain open.
All lakes have bacteria, but city officials are required to close lakes if bacteria goes past the recommended levels.
The city is testing the waters two times a week and the lakes will reopen once the levels are safe for use.
Algae blooms have been found in other lakes around the Bay Area including Lake Anza in Berkeley and the waters near Discovery Bay.
