Ofc. Jeffrey Azuar was shot and killed after he and another Ofc. attempted to serve a failure to appear warrant on a suspect.

Ofc. Azuar had been employed with the Vallejo Police Dept. for 21 years, and is survived by his daughter.

————-Police Ofc. Jeffrey Fontana, 24

San Jose Police Dept.

End of Watch: Sunday, October 28, 2001

Ofc. Jeffrey Fontana was shot and killed while patrolling an affluent neighborhood in San Jose.

Ofc. Fontana had been employed with the San Jose Police Dept. for about one year, but had only been on patrol by himself for one week. He is survived by his parents and two brothers.

————-Inspector Raymond Joseph Giacomelli, 46

Pittsburg Police Dept.

Inspector Giacomelli was shot and killed while conducting a murder investigation.

Inspector Giacomelli had been employed with the Pittsburg Police Dept. for 23 years. He is survived by his wife and two teenage daughters.

Ofc. Isaac Espinoza was shot and killed as he and his partner investigated a suspicious person on Newhall Street at approximately 9:30 pm.

Ofc. Espinoza had served with the San Francisco Police Dept. for eight years, and was assigned to the Bayview Station. He is survived by his wife, 3-year-old daughter, parents, and sister.

Police Ofc. Larry Lasater succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day while attempting to arrest two robbery suspects on the Delta De Anza Regional Trail.

Ofc. Lasater was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Pittsburg Police Dept. for 5 years. He was survived by his expectant wife, mother, and brother. His son was born 2 1/2 months after his death.

Ofc. Nels Niemi was shot and killed in an ambush attack while investigating a disturbance call on Doolittle Drive.

Ofc. Niemi had served with the San Leandro Police Dept. for 3 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Ofc. Richard May was shot and killed when he responded to a disturbance call.

Ofc. May was a US Marine Corps veteran and had served with the East Palo Alto Police Dept. for 18 months. He had previously served for 13 years with the Lompoc Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Ofc. Tuvera had served with the San Francisco Police Dept. for 4 1/2 years. He is survived by his wife, who also serves as a San Francisco police officer, mother, and sister.

Sgt. Paul Starzyk was shot and killed while responding to a shots fired call at a local hair salon.

Sgt. Starzyk was a 12-year veteran of the Martinez Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Sgt. Daniel Sakai and Sgt. Ervin Romans, SWAT team members, were killed when they attempted to apprehend a suspect that had earlier in the day shot and killed Sgt. Mark Dunakin and mortally wounded Ofc. John Hege during a traffic stop.

Sgt. Sakai had served with the Oakland Police Dept. for nine years.

Sgt. Mark Dunakin and Ofc. John Hege were shot and killed during a traffic stop at 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. During the stop, the driver opened fire, killing Sgt. Dunakin and mortally wounding Ofc. Hege. Citizens who witnessed the incident called 911 and started CPR on both officers.

Sgt. Dunakin had served with the Oakland Police Dept. for 17 years and is survived by his wife and three children.

Ofc. Youngstrom was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Highway Patrol for seven years. He is survived by his wife, four children, mother, and five siblings.

Sgt. Loran Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed as they followed up on a sexual assault investigation at a residence in the 800 block of North Branciforte Avenue at approximately 3:30 pm.

Sgt. Baker had served with the Santa Cruz Police Dept. for 28 years. He is survived by his wife, son, two daughters, parents, and sister. Sgt. Baker’s son also serves with the Santa Cruz Police Department.
