It was a busy morning cleaning up broken glass and replacing shattered windows for some residents in Benicia.
Vehicles parked on West M Street, West 3rd Street, and East O Street woke up to their car windows smashed overnight.
“This is my first time ever having my car smashed,” says victim Kennon McClanahan.
Kennon McClanahan and his family have lived in Benicia for over 40 years. His girlfriend’s car was also vandalized. They say it could have been worse.
“Actually my girlfriend had a wallet that was in the passenger side door and they didn’t even touch that,” says McClanahan.
Benicia Police received their first 9-1-1 call Tuesday around 2am.
In the following hours, three dozen vehicles were reported vandalized.
“Officers arrived and located 36-vehicles with side shattered windows. There was some items taken from the vehicles. A lot of the property was found on the street. It appears to be an act of vandalism. We are going door to door contacting any residents in the area to see if they have any security footage to give us any leads,” according to Corporal Marjonne Roberson from the Benicia Police Department.
Vandalism victims are covering their broken windows with plastic bags or coming up with the cash to have their windows replaced.
“I have to pay the guy who is fixing my window on my car now. This is not even in my insurance plan. I have to pay him 300-hundred-dollars. So this is not the funnest time,” says McClanahan.
Investigators say they are unsure at this point if the vandals are locals or from out of town.
