Three Bay Area cities listed among country’s top ten most expensive places to live in

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — According to data compiled by the financial forecasting website Kiplinger.com, three of the top ten most expensive U.S. cities to live in are here in the Bay Area: San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland.

Los Angeles and San Diego — numbers 9 and 10 respectively — round out the list to make California the priciest place to call home.


The cost of living in San Francisco, ranked No. 3 on the list, is 61.6% higher than the national median, according to the report.

In addition to the high cost of living in San Francisco, the city also boasts one of the country’s highest housing costs. According to Zillow.com, the median home value in the U.S. is $178,400; the median home value in San Francisco is $1,022,500.

Zillow also says that the median rent price in San Francisco is $3,995, which is higher than the San Francisco Metro median of $2,800.

Kiplinger used data from the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) to create a list.

The top ten expensive cities, according to the research, are:

2. Honolulu

3. San Francisco

4. San Jose, Calif.

5. Stamford, Conn.

6. Washington, D.C.

7. Boston

8. Oakland, Calif.

9. Los Angeles

10. San Diego
