SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thousands of people continued one of Springfield’s largest traditions on Saturday at the 30th Annual World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.

Families, friends, and strangers sat together in the middle of Main Street to eat breakfast.

Susan Lunsford of Springfield told WWLP-TV her family comes year after year. “We’ve been coming here for the last, at least 4 years. I think it brings this whole community together, and I think it’s a wonderful thing that they do here,” she said.

Bringing the whole community together takes a lot of preparation, including 500 pounds of pancake batter, and enough volunteers to keep the lines moving quickly.

Milton Carrasquillo told WWLP-TV he’s volunteered at the breakfast every year, for the past 11 years. “It’s something I do every year that I like to participate in. I do basically anywhere between 1,500 and 1,800 pancakes,” he said.

The event has been attracting large crowds to the city since 1976. Although it has gone through changes over the years, one thing remains the same, the food.

Zadora Matias of Springfield told WWLP-TV the food’s the best part. “My favorite part is when they cook all of the pancakes and bacon,” she said.

But the day isn’t all about the pancakes and bacon, Carolyn Roberts of Holyoke said it’s also about tradition. “I think anything that brings people out in Springfield, especially such a positive setting is great, and doing something like this is awesome,” she said.
