A burglar is caught on camera before smashing a window and stealing the surveillance system along with other valuables in a quiet Redwood City home.

KRON4 met with the victims who want to keep their identities private in light of the crime but need the help of viewers to catch the thief.

The victim tells KRON4 that never in his nine years of owning a home in Redwood City did he think he would be a victim of a burglary, but that’s exactly what happened in broad daylight this week.

Now, they’re left looking for the thief and their valuables.

The couple came home to a shattered window and their valuables gone on Tuesday morning.

The couple who wishes to remain anonymous for their safety reviewed surveillance video that shows this man pick up a tool from their yard around 10 a.m. before breaking and entering.

“He used their shears and had bent to get this screen out first and then got under the window and was able to wedge the window upwards and outwards into the house,” the victim said.

The burglary happened in a peaceful residential neighborhood near the Red Morton Community Park where longtime residents say they’ve never had a problem before.

“It’s primarily a safe neighborhood,” neighbor Tyrone Jones said. “No neighborhood is immune from burglary or anything like that, but for the most part, residents feel secure and safe.”

Once inside, the thief then targeted electronics stealing a MacBook, iPad, Google Home, an electric toothbrush, along with irreplaceable items of sentimental value.

“There’s a lot of sentimental value,” the victim said. “There’s gifts that we gave each other, especially wedding gifts, so it’s really hurtful that he took those.”

The couple wants viewers to take a good look at the suspect, and if they see him, to call the police.

They say their stolen iPad sent a ping the next day from San Mateo at 333 North San Mateo Road.

A police department employee of more than 20 years tells KRON4 that in the last eight years or so, she’s seen this type of crime go down, and although uncommon, it does happen everywhere.
