OAKLAND (KRON/BCN) — Alameda County coroner’s officials have released the name of a teenage passenger who was killed when the speeding car he was in crashed outside an Oakland funeral home Monday night.
The victim has been identified as 17-year-old DeShawn Thomas Rabon of San Leandro. Investigators say he was a passenger in the Toyota Solara and was riding without a seatbelt in the backseat when the fatal crash happened.
Police say the Toyota was speeding down Telegraph Avenue in the city’s Pill Hill neighborhood just before 10 p.m. when the driver tried to change lanes. The car then swerved toward the curb and crashed into several parking meters and a palm tree, police said.
The car rolled over and stopped in front of Fouche’s Hudson Funeral Home at 3665 Telegraph Ave. A woman walking in the area was either hit by the car or flying debris and was taken to a hospital. She was reported
to be in stable condition Tuesday.
Officers arrived on the scene to find Rabon’s body in the backseat of the crumpled car. The driver and at least one passenger ran from the car after the crash, witnesses told police.
Investigators are trying to track down the driver and the other passenger. Police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said as of Wednesday morning, there were no arrests and no detailed description of the people police are looking for.
Oakland police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a $10,000 reward for an arrest in the case. Anyone with information has been asked to call the department’s traffic investigation unit at (510) 777-8570.
