PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida teenager is facing charges he abused a 47-day old baby.
19-year-old Steven Jones is facing aggravated child abuse charges after police say the baby sustained abusive head trauma including, a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain and a shift of the brain due to pressure on his head.
Officials noted the baby also had multiple bruises midway down his back and spine, and one bruise on the right side of his stomach. Largo Police said they believe these bruises look like fingerprints created by grabbing the baby too tightly.
The baby is on a ventilator and is recovering from an abdomen injury.
Jones reported to police the baby slipped out of his arms, striking his head and side on the bathtub. The Child Protection Team said the baby’s injuries are from a high force impact, and do not align with Jones’ explanation.
The police affidavit states medical attention was not sought for the baby until later that evening.
Jones admitted to being the only person with the baby at the time of its injuries and had additional explanation for the baby’s injuries.
