Teen burned to death after accusing principal of sexual harassment

A young woman in Bangladesh was reportedly burned to death after she accused the head master at her school of sexual harassment and refused to retract her complaint.

According to the BBC, 19-year-old Nusrat Jahan Rafi was lured to the roof of her madrasa, or Islamic school, on April 6.

That’s where authorities say she was doused in kerosene by four suspects wearing burqas.

This all after she reportedly refused to withdraw her case against the principal, according to the BBC.

Officials say about 80% of her body was burned. She died four days later at the hospital.

Rafi had reported her principal, Maulana Siraj Ud Doula, called her into his office on March 27 and repeatedly touched her inappropriately.

Rafi reportedly said the principal had also been repeatedly sexually harassing her and that her teachers told her to keep the incident to herself.

Rafi’s family told local media that police said her complaint against her principal was “no big deal.”

Her statement to police was filmed and posted to social media by a police officer.

In the video, Rafi can be seen crying and covering her face with her hands.

The police officer can be heard telling her it’s “not a big deal” and to “stop crying, nothing happened that you have to cry,” the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Rafi’s death has sparked protests demanding the government changes its laws surrounding sexual assault.

Additionally, police have also launched an investigation into the handling of Rafi’s case.

The officer who shared the video of Rafi on social media is being sued as it is illegal to share such material online under the Digital Security Act.

The principal involved has since been arrested.

More than a dozen others are also in custody in connection with Rafi’s death, including four other students.
