OAKLAND (KRON) — Samsung is making it harder for customers to keep using its Galaxy Note 7 phone.
That is the smartphone Samsung stopped selling back in October due to a battery issue that caused some phones to catch fire while charging.
More than 90 percent of all Note 7s in the United States have been returned to Samsung.
Now, the company wants to make sure remaining users get rid of their phones.
Samsung will release a software update on Dec. 19 that, if downloaded, blocks the Note 7 from recharging. That would make the phone unusable.
Not everybody is supporting Samsung’s decision.
Verizon says it won’t push the update to its customers who are still using the recalled Note 7.
