KRON4’s Catherine Heenan is honoring an East Bay teacher who shares the classroom with wild animals.

Not every teacher can get kids happy about a school assembly, but at Treeview Elementary in Hayward, a wildlife lady does just that.

For 28 years, Michele Durant has been visiting schools as part of Wildlife Associates, a nationally acclaimed education program based in Half Moon Bay.

She wants children to really care about the animals. She believes if little ones can get this excited about seeing a porcupine, they’re more likely to grow up feeling connected to wildlife and the whole world around them.
