REDWOOD CITY (KRON) — A taxicab driver was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and felony child endangerment Tuesday night, according to California Highway Patrol.

A San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a taxicab who was driving erratically and speeding on US-101 in Redwood City, authorities said.

Officers said it was apparent that the driver of the taxicab was under the influence of alcohol.

Officers found a toddler the back seat of the taxi. The young boy was not in a car seat and was secured using the car’s seatbelt, which had become wrapped around his neck, authorities said.

The driver was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and felony child endangerment.

The young boy was transferred to the custody of child protective services, according to authorities.

Authorities are reminding drivers to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, especially not when there is a young child aboard. Also, when transporting a young child under 8, make sure they are properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat.
