SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — A man is in critical condition this afternoon after fire crews rescued him from the water at San Francisco’s Aquatic Park, fire officials said.
At 12:17 p.m., fire crews responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at the park, according to fire officials.
A fire department rescue watercraft, along with fire rescue swimmers, responded and were able to pull the 40-year-old man to safety, fire officials said.
The victim was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
Fire officials said they are unable to confirm if the victim was wearing a lifejacket, according to fire officials.
Fire crews have been gearing up for the holiday weekend, as many residents and visitors are expected to head to the beach.
In preparation for Labor Day on Monday, crews trained this morning at Ocean Beach, fire department spokesman Lt. Jonathan Baxter said.
Fire officials are asking beachgoers to be cautious of dangerous conditions such as strong rip currents, large shore breaks and cold water temperatures, which could lead to hypothermia.
Additionally, the fire department recommends that beachgoers head to beaches where trained lifeguards are stationed, such as Stinson Beach in Marin County, Baxter said.
