Suspects arrested for credit card fraud, $125K worth of merchandise recovered

SAN CARLOS (KRON) — Four suspects were arrested Wednesday in San Carlos in connection with credit card fraud, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office.

Edwin Fernandez, 23, of Quincy, Massachusetts, Elijah Clarke, 20, of Middletown, New York, Musa Kanuteh, 29, of Bronx, New York, and Mitchell Malachi, 26, of Fayetteville, Georgia, tried to use the credit cards at a San Carlos Best Buy, according to police.


Deputies responded to the Best Buy located at 1127 Industrial Road at 9:10 p.m. after reports of people attempting to use fraudulent credit cards.

Deputies were able to apprehend the suspects in the store’s parking lot.  Police discovered hundreds of fraudulent gift and credit cards in the suspects’ vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

There were also 131 new iPhone 6s, associated accessories, two MacBook Pros and high-end clothing found in the vehicle, deputies said.The estimated value of the items stolen was $125,000.

Fernandez, Clarke, Kanuteh and Malachi were arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary, identity theft, fraudulent use of access cards, manufacturing faces access cards, possession of an access card with intent to defraud and conspiracy, sheriff’s officials said.
