Suspects accused of shooting at police in Menlo Park appear in court Friday

HAYWARD (BCN) — Three suspects who allegedly committed a home invasion robbery in Fremont on April 29 and then fired shots at police officers in Menlo Park during a pursuit were scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Alameda County Superior Court on multiple serious felony charges.

Police said Haloti Lauese, 22, of East Palo Alto, Derrick Fracure, 19, of Sunnyvale, and Demetrius Crayton, 18, of East Palo Alto, were all armed when they robbed three people at an apartment in the 39800 block of Fremont Boulevard the evening of April 29.

Police said shots were fired during the incident but no one was injured.

The three men fled but Fremont officers found them on state Highway 84 and pursued them across the Dumbarton Bridge with assistance from Newark police, police said. Shots were fired at Newark and Fremont police officers in the 1300 block of Willow Road in Menlo Park, according to Menlo Park police spokeswoman Nicole Acker.

A Newark police patrol car was struck by the gunfire but the officers were not injured and didn’t return fire, Acker said. The three suspects fled on foot into a business park but two of them, Lauese and Fracure, who’s also known as Shawn Oceola Thomas, were apprehended.

Crayton was able to escape but was arrested in Redwood City on May 6.

Two firearms were recovered in connection with the incident, Acker said.

Lauese, Fracure and Crayton are each charged with three counts of premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer, three counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer and three counts of home invasion robbery in concert.

Fracure and Crayton are also charged with being ex-felons in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors alleged that Fracure has a prior conviction of first-degree residential robbery and Crayton has a conviction for carrying a loaded firearm.

Prior to today’s hearing, Lauese and Crayton were being held without bail and Fracure was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
