SAN JOSE (BCN) — A 26-year-old man shot by two officers as he allegedly hit his mother with an ax Wednesday morning in South San Jose has been identified as Daniel Rynazewski, police said on Thursday.

Rynazewski is accused of striking his 62-year-old mother with the tool outside a home in the 1400 block of Lansing Avenue, police said.

He has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder, according to police.

The officers who shot at the suspect have been identified as officers Glenn Baldwin and William Hall, police said.

Officers had responded to the street around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a traffic collision and couldn’t find an accident, but saw a man later identified as Rynazewski chase a woman with an ax outside a home near Jarvis Avenue, police said.

The officers communicated commands to the suspect and Baldwin fired shots at the suspect as he allegedly struck the woman’s back with the ax, according to police.

When Rynazewski and his mother ended up on the ground, Baldwin then used his Taser on the suspect as he reached for the ax, police said.

Rynazewski barely reacted to the shocks, was able to pull out prongs from the Taser from his body and struck his mother again on her head, police said.

Both officers then shot at Rynazewski, who fell down and was placed into custody, according to police.

The suspect suffered multiple gunshot wounds and his mother had serious injuries, police said.

Both mother and son were transported to a hospital where they received treatment and were in stable condition, according to police.

Baldwin, a 24-year veteran with the department, and Hall, who has worked three years with the force, have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to police.

The suspect, who police said suffers from mental illness, has been booked into Santa Clara County Jail without bail.

The incident marks the department’s third officer-involved shooting this year.

The San Jose police internal affairs unit, San Jose independent police auditor and Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is monitoring the investigation, according to police.
