ANTIOCH (BCN) — Police arrested a man Monday after he led officers on a short pursuit in a stolen vehicle in Antioch, police said on Thursday.

At 2:43 p.m., an officer spotted a stolen vehicle near Antioch High School, located on W. 18th Street, according to police.

The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Antioch on Saturday.

The officer followed the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled to avoid officers, police said.

At one point, the driver headed back toward the high school and officers terminated the pursuit for safety reasons, as classes were finishing, according to police.

The driver of the stolen vehicle got stuck in traffic and tried to make a u-turn, striking a vehicle, which had a woman with a 2-month old child inside, police said.

Officers quickly detained the driver, identified as 41-year-old Richmond resident Sonny Mitchell.

Officers learned Mitchell was on parole. A search of Mitchell’s phone yielded numerous images of child pornography which appear to have been downloaded from the internet, according to police.

Officers booked Mitchell into the Contra Costa County Jail.

On Wednesday, the District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges on Mitchell for auto theft, evading police and possession of child pornography, police said.
