SAN JOSE (BCN) — A 26-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI for a string of collisions that damaged eight cars and injured four people, including two

California Highway Patrol officers, on state Highway 85 in San Jose late Tuesday afternoon, agency officials said.

Lerissa Giovanna Evans, of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury, CHP officials said.

Two other drivers suffered major injuries and the two officers were left with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

The officers were investigating a three-car collision on southbound Highway 85 south of Union Avenue around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, CHP officials said.

All the vehicles were on the right shoulder where the officers were speaking to the driver of a 2005 Toyota Solara, who was sitting on the passenger’s side and positioned behind the two other cars involved in the collision, according to the CHP.

Evans drove a green 1998 Ford Explorer into the area at about 70 mph and lost control of the SUV, which collided into the rear of a blue BMW and red Honda CR-V, CHP officials said.

The Honda CR-V then collided into the back of a silver Toyota Highlander, which ended up in another lane and went into a red truck, according to the CHP.

The 26-year-old woman then allegedly crashed into the Toyota Solara that slid down the shoulder and struck the two officers who were thrown to the ground, CHP officials said.

The Solara driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed underneath the car, according to the CHP.

The Solara and CR-V drivers suffered major injuries and were transported to a hospital along with the officers, CHP officials said.

Before the collisions, officers were told to be on the lookout for someone driving a green Ford Explorer erratically on the right shoulder and center median, according to the CHP.

More officers who responded to the scene determined Evans was driving the Ford Explorer and allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol, CHP officials said.

Anyone who witnessed or has information on the collisions is asked to call the San Jose area CHP Office at (408) 467-5400.
