PACIFICA (KRON) — The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 36 year old, James Bernard Hofler of Grandy, North Carolina for the attempted murder of two La Honda residents, which occurred on the morning of March 12, 2016, according to police officials Wednesday.

On March 16, 2016, at approximately 1:00 in the morning, the Pacifica Police Department and the California Highway Patrol received a report of a person walking on Highway 1, south of Manor Drive, in Pacifica.

A Pacifica Police Officer was first on the scene, and when he contacted the pedestrian, who turned out to be Hofler, a struggle ensued.

Both the Officer and Hofler tumbled down a freeway embankment. Then, as the Officer attempted to take Holfer into custody, Hofler fired one shot, which thankfully missed the Officer. The Officer was able to disarm Hofler, and with help from additional responding Officers, Holfer was taken into custody, according to police officials.

The Police Officer involved in the scuffle, himself a 3-year veteran of the Pacifica Police Department, suffered minor injuries, and was treated at a local hospital, then released.

Hofler suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, after which he was then released from the hospital and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility for the listed charges.

During the investigation, detectives were able to identify James Bernard Hofler as a suspect and they were able to obtain a warrant for his arrest, according to police officials.
