HALF MOON BAY (KRON) — Top surfers are gearing up to participate in the Titans of Mavericks Surf contest off the Half Moon Bay coast Friday morning.
The contest was set to start at 8 a.m. but was postponed due to heavy fog. The surfers officially hit the waves at 8:40 a.m.
The surfing competition is known as one of the most hazardous sporting events in the world.
The one-day invitation-only event starts at 7:30 a.m. a half-mile off Pillar Point Harbor and only if surf conditions are good.
Since there is a high surf warning along the coast, there is no festival or viewing site in person this year for the contest.
Watch it live via webcast on the event’s website, RebBull.tv or at several restaurants and businesses from Santa Cruz to San Francisco.
Two dozen big-name, big-wave surfers are expected to participate in the Titans of Mavericks contest.
Waves in Half Moon Bay can reach 60 feet in height and crash with such force that their strength can be recorded on the Richter scale, organizers said.
