(KRON) — A newly released study says Tylenol is now safe to give to toddlers with asthma.
“It’s reassuring that we can now let parents know that it is, in this particular population, safe to use acetaminophen on an as-needed basis,” says Kristie Ross, MD, Clinical Director of the Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. “There had been groups and physicians who advocated that we should advise parents not to use acetaminophen in children with asthma.”
Ross co-authored the study.
It appears in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 18. It observed over 300 children between the ages of 1 and 5 who have asthma and randomly gave someone either Tylenol or Motrin during one year.
Children that took Tylenol did not have increased symptoms of asthma compared to the ones that took Motrin.
About 10 percent of elementary school children have asthma while one-third of preschool aged children have it.
