SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — SOS takes on a new meaning in San Francisco’s South Market neighborhood as rent hikes continue to plague businesses, this time an LGBTQ staple.
The Stud Bar serves as a hangout and some say even a sanctuary in the gay community. The bar now faces a triple rent hike.
Organizers of bar events say the new rent will be impossible to raise monthly, so they formed a co-op called “Save Our Stud” or SOS.
Within 24 hours of the rent increase notice, those who call the Stud Bar a second home organized the co-op in hopes of convincing the landlord to drop the rent to a more reasonable payment.
