Steinle’s brother on not guilty verdict: ‘The system failed Kate from the start of the chain of events’

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The brother of Kate Steinle is reacting to the not guilty verdict in her murder case.

On Thursday afternoon, the jury announced they found Jose Ines Garcia Zarate not guilty of murdering Kate Steinle on Pier 14 two years ago.

Steinle’s brother texted KRON4’s Maureen Kelly after the verdict.

Here is the full text message:

Hey Maureen. I’m not surprised. The system failed Kate from the start of the chain of events. From the dropped drug charge he was brought to SF for, his release without notifying ICE because of ex sheriff Mirkirimi, the unsecured gun left by the BLM agent. Why would the verdict if this case be any different. The system failed Kate on all levels.

The verdict has not effected our family much. We’re glad all of this is over and we can remember Kate embrace her memory on our terms. Like kate said on the FB post on the day she died. “Whatever’s good for your soul…. do that!” That’s what I’ll take from all of this. That’s what Kate would want.
