Statue of Liberty evacuated after suspicious package reported

NEW YORK (KRON) — The Statue of Liberty has been evacuated after New York City police got a report of a suspicious package at the attraction.

Friday afternoon, the New York Police Department said it harbor units at the scene, along with the National Park Service.

Visitors are posting photos online showing hundreds of people being herded toward a ferry landing.

Tourists say they were taken off boats while trying to leave nearby Ellis Island. Those boats then were used to evacuate the Statue of Liberty’s Liberty Island.

Karen Mason, of Cincinnati, Ohio, says the scene was “very orderly.” However, some have complained that they were not told what led to the evacuation.

United States Park Police say they received a phoned bomb threat around 11:30 a.m., according to two law enforcement officials. The caller claimed there was something inside a visitors’ locker.

Park police swept the area with bomb-sniffing, dogs and one of the dogs indicated something suspicious in a locker, the officials said.
