SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Memorial Day is one of the busiest days of the year for St. Anthony’s Dining Hall in San Francisco. Every Memorial Day, they serve about 3,500 meals to San Francisco’s hungry.

That’s about a thousand meals more than they serve on an average day.

Of those $3,500 people, about 20%, or 1 in 5, have served in the armed forces.

Executive Director Barry Stenger remarked, “Memorial Day makes for a perfect storm in our Dining Room. Volunteers can be hard to find, it’s the end of the month so our people are low on funds, and other meal programs are closed.”

This year was no exception, with people lined up outside the church, waiting for a hot meal.

Volunteers, both young and old, were on hand, smiling as they served some of San Francisco’s veterans and others in need.
