Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto in Berkeley suddenly closes after 128 years

An East Bay staple suddenly closed its doors after 128 years, leaving loyal customers saddened and confused.

Spenger’s will no longer be serving its well-known seafood. This is a shock to everyone.

It seems like the closure came out of nowhere and word is spreading fast.

One after the other, patrons showed up for dinner Wednesday night to a shuttered restaurant and no explanation–just a sign saying Spenger’s has closed its doors permanently and an apology for any inconvenience.

Diners will have to find someplace else to feed their seafood craving. The Berkeley landmark has served a number of celebrities as well as locals.

For now, the establishment has applied for a change in ownership.

Neighbors better gear up. There will definitely be more changes along 4th Street.

KRON4 spotted employees inside, but regardless of how hard we tried, they would not acknowledge KRON4.

So many questions and still no answers.

KRON4 reached out to the owners for comment, but as of this hour, we haven’t heard back.
