SUNSET BEACH (KRON) — A Southern California surfer captured a close encounter with a shark with his camera.

The surfer had a GoPro camera rolling when this happened at Sunset Beach. A great white shark leaped out of the water.

Jumping or breaching, as it is called, is common with younger sharks. The surfer was with a buddy who saw another shark swim by.

They quickly decided it was time to get out of the water.

“I had it in my mouth. I just pressed record, and right away, we saw it. Both of us knew what we were seeing,” surfer Drew Palumbo said.

“Initially, I knew it was a shark and said it is time to go, it is time to go no, playing around. Time to go in,” surfer Ben Slayback said.

The two surfers said the sighting has spooked them, and they are going to change surf spots.

There were reports of a great white shark in the area over the weekend.
