SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — Two people who died following a vehicle collision in South San Francisco on Friday night have been identified as San Francisco resident Fabiola Corona, 18, and Brisbane resident Gabriel Maldonado, 21, according to the San Mateo County coroner’s office.
The pair died after the Honda they were in collided with another car, struck a tree, rolled over and then struck another tree, causing the car to be split in half. The victims were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, identified as 19-year-old Joshua Maldonado of Brisbane, suffered minor injuries and was arrested.
He is being charged by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and will appear in San Mateo County Superior Court in Redwood City on Tuesday afternoon to be arraigned, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
The collision was first reported around 11:55 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Pine Avenue, police said.
Investigators at the scene concluded the green 1994 Honda Civic was traveling south on Airport Boulevard between 80 and 90 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to police.
The Honda then had a glancing collision with a Mazda at the intersection at Pine Avenue. The collision caused the Honda to strike a tree along the road, roll over and then strike a second tree, splitting the car in half.
The Mazda that collided with the Honda sustained minor damage and the driver and passenger in that car were uninjured, police said.
Officers at the scene noted that Joshua Maldonado displayed signs of being intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. After he was released from the hospital Saturday morning, officers arrested him, according to police.
