SANTA CRUZ COUNTY (KRON) — No sooner had they cleared the scene of one accident on rain slick Highway 17 when firefighters and other first responders were headed for another.
The driver of an SUV was taken to the hospital with what were said to be minor injuries while two passengers walked away.
The CHP said a now twisted guard rail may have saved their lives.
It was one of several, mostly single-vehicle accidents that made for a slow, messy commute over the hill.
Not far away, Bear Creek and other mountain roads were equally treacherous amid periods of moderate to heavy rain that could only run off the already saturated ground. In the valley below, fender benders on West San Carlos Street in San Jose snarled traffic.
Standing water like this is evidence that storm drains, clogged with debris, are having trouble keeping up with all the rain.
Drivers must dodge puddles and potholes that can pop a tire or worse. San Jose has already tripled it’s pothole crew in recent weeks.
Wednesday was windy too amid reports of downed trees.
It was one of those days where you were reaching for your sunglasses one minute and your umbrella the next.
The fruitless plum trees are suggesting that spring is around the corner. Then again, keep that umbrella handy.
