DISCOVERY BAY, Calif. (AP) – The family of a 9-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed by his brother’s friend during a sleepover at their Northern California home didn’t know the suspected killer had mental issues.
That’s according to attorney Michael Verna, who is representing the young boy’s family.
Verna said Wednesday that his clients didn’t know 18-year-old William Shultz saw a psychiatrist the same day he slept over at their house in Discovery Bay.
Authorities said Schultz was taken to a hospital Saturday for a mental evaluation and was discharged after being diagnosed with being delusional. After a fight with his mother, Schultz went to sleep at his best friend’s house.
Shultz told the newspaper he killed his friend’s little brother “to see what it was like to take a life.”
