SAN JOSE (KRON) — San Jose Police said a man first charged at officers before his arrest in a video-taped incident that prompted use of force allegations against officers.
22-year-old Juan Moreno-Lopez was arrested on Saturday in the area of Story Road and White Road. His arrest and confrontation with police were caught on video and widely circulated on social media.
Investigators said police observed Moreno-Lopez tossing something into the bushes as two officers approached him. He then ran away into the middle of the intersection at Story and White Roads and turned toward the officers in a combative manner, according to police.
“Lopez attempted to attack one officer with a bottle and engaged both officers in a physical altercation,” said the SJPD in a statement. Investigators said additional officers arrived on scene and attempted to help subdue Moreno-Lopez but that he continued to resist arrest, even after he was handcuffed.
Paramedics arrived and brought Moreno-Lopez to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
He was later released from the hospital and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, being under the influence of a stimulant, possession of methamphetamine, and destruction of evidence.
