VALLEJO (KRON) — At least one person was killed in a vehicle accident in Vallejo Friday afternoon.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Sonoma Boulevard near Redwood Parkway.
Vallejo Traffic Sgt. Michael Nichelini said that a driver in a sedan was traveling northbound on Sonoma Boulevard from Redwood Parkway when the driver, a 65-year-old man, left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk, sideswiping a bus stop, striking a 50-year-old male pedestrian there.
He then continued north on the sidewalk, hitting a telephone pole and then a group of five pedestrians including three woman, ranging in ages from 25 to 40, and two children, a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.
The car dragged two of the pedestrians north on the sidewalk before it came to a rest.
One of the pedestrians who was dragged, a 40-year-old female, was declared dead at the scene. Five others were taken to the hospital with conditions ranging from critical to serious.
The deceased 40-year-old woman and the other victim stuck under the Nissan were extricated with the help of a passing tow truck driver, Nichelini noted.
Three of the pedestrians hit were a mother and her two children. Michelini said that both children are alive, but one had to be taken to Children’s Hospital Oakland by helicopter.
Sgt. Nichelini said that one person is reported dead, but that number is likely to grow. Nichelini said that there were three helicopters at the scene.
The driver of the car was detained by police and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
Nichelini said that they think the driver may have had “intoxication issues.”
Police said that they will be on-scene for a while and that traffic will be impacted through the area.
