SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board approved a $3.25 million settlement in a lawsuit filed by the family of a cyclist who was killed three years ago when a Muni bus hit him.

Cheng Jin Lai, 78, was hit by a bus near Bryant, 11th and Division streets around 8:40 a.m. on October 18,2013.

Lai’s family filed the lawsuit on July 24, 2014 and claims city officials knew before the collision that the intersection was dangerous, but did not improve safety in the area.

All 800 Muni buses were inspected following the crash. The bus involved had a wheel guard missing on one of its wheels. The death might have been prevented if the wheel guard had been in place.

Lai lived in San Francisco and left behind his wife and seven children.
