SUGAR LAND, Texas (KRON) – Statues are usually meant to immortalize war heroes, influential citizens, sports legends, famous artists, and other historical figures and events.

The city of Sugar Land, Texas, is paying homage to the selfie.

The decision by Sugar Land officials to erect a bronze sculpture commemorating the selfie is drawing outrage from locals — especially the younger citizens who have taken to social media to criticize the life-size statue.

“The new statue in sugar land town center of 2 girls taking a selfie makes me really sad. If you’re going to put one, make it meaningful,” said Rachel Lee on Twitter.

The statue of two girls taking a selfie, which was installed in a city plaza outside City Hall, is meant to depict a common activity in the area, according to city officials.
