LOS ANGELES (AP) – A man charged with driving a souped-up Mustang that killed two spectators during a Los Angeles street race has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Prosecutors say 42-year-old Karen Balyan surrendered in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday.

He’s jailed on $3 million bail and could face up to life in prison if convicted.

His attorney, Michael Kraut, says Balyan was visiting a country that doesn’t have a U.S. extradition treaty but returned to “do the honorable thing” and face charges.

Authorities say Balyan’s Mustang spun out of control during an illegal race on Feb. 26 in the San Fernando Valley.

Twenty-six-year-old Eric Siguenza and 50-year-old Wilson Thomas Wong died.

A third man was seriously injured.

The other driver and a race promoter also have been charged with murder.
