Search for teens accused of stealing gun from Santa Clara home

The hunt is on for a stolen gun that could be in the hands of some teens who allegedly stole it during a burglary in Santa Clara.

The teens are accused of stealing a Glock 9mm and a box of ammunition.

The worry, of course, is that the gun could be used to commit another crime and that somebody could get hurt.

Surveillance video shows someone Santa Clara police are calling a person of interest.

The video was shot last Thursday near the corner of Benton Avenue and White Drive where a home was burglarized at about 1 p.m. The victim tells police the thieves got in through an unlocked door and made off with a PlayStation, some designer apparel, and the gun.

“Anytime there is a gun stolen, it is concerning, but in this case, the victim believes the gun was stolen by a group of juveniles and that is a second layer of concern, that the gun is in the hands of young people,” Santa Clara police Capt. Wahid Kazem said.

The victim explained to police how the burglars ransacked his home and discovered ammunition for the weapon.

Police say they are taking the victim’s theory about juvenile perpetrators seriously, but what is not clear is whether the victim was somehow targeted of if the burglary was a random crime.

“I don’t know if there was a preconceived idea of what was in the residence before the burglary or if it was simply a matter that they found the gun as they were going through the victim’s belongings,” Kazem said.

Aside from the victim’s suspicions, there is no evidence the perpetrators are local, but police say they are nonetheless working with local schools in their search for suspects.

Police admit the person of interest in the surveillance video may simply be someone passing by about the time the gun was stolen, but they are calling on the public for help in this case.
