Three dead grey whales have been spotted in the Bay just since Saturday — Five in recent weeks.
On Wednesday afternoon, scientists descended on Esplanade Beach in Pacifica to conduct a post mortem.
They know it’s a female and unlike some of the other dead whales that have washed up, it does not show signs of malnourishment.
This is one of seven grey whales that have turned up dead in the Bay Area this year.
Grey whales are in their migration period that continues into May but to see this many die, is not normal.
A spike 20 years ago turned out to be because the whale population recovered to a point that it couldn’t be supported by its food supply.
Now a network of scientists working up and down the West Coast are trying to determine if we are seeing a repeat of something that is part of the natural cycle or something else.
The whale out in Pacifica will be towed out to sea tomorrow at 9 a.m.
