SANTA ROSA (KRON) — Sonoma County Sheriff’s officials believe gang activity may be behind a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man early Monday morning, investigators said.

Deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 2300 block of Corby Avenue, in an unincorporated area near Santa Rosa at about 1:45 a.m. Monday. When deputies arrived on scene, they found five people loading a shooting victim into a car. They told deputies that they were trying to get him to a hospital, according to investigators. Those people were detained and an ambulance arrived a short time later to take the victim to the hospital.

Sheriff’s officials shut down Corby, from Hearn Avenue to Smokewood Drive, as they conducted their investigation. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Investigation and Crime Scene Investigation units were called to the scene.

Investigators say witnesses provided very few details about what happened. Deputies say no one reported actually seeing the shooting. Witnesses described hearing a gun go off and someone screaming and crying. A neighbor told detectives that they thought they saw two males dressed in all black run off following the sound of gunfire.

Detectives say they’re considering the homicide a gang-related shooting. Investigators say there is no suspect description at this time.

Sheriff’s officials say the victim was shot more than once and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Late Monday morning, officials identified him as Austin Sargent-Deselle of Santa Rosa.

During the course of the investigation, two men were arrested on charges unrelated to the shooting, deputies said. 19-year-old Abel Driscol Lomeli of Santa Rosa was arrested for a violation of probation. He was booked into county jail. His bail was set at $1,000. 31-year-old Jose Ricardo Rubio-Rivas, also from Santa Rosa, was arrested for an outstanding warrant. His bail has been set at $50,000.

Officials are urging the community to help solve the case. They’re asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
