SAN QUENTIN (KRON) — A group of inmates at San Quentin State Prison will soon become thespians, performing 2 plays by William Shakespeare and one original work about issues facing military veterans.

Inmates will perform “Julius Caesar” on May 15, the original work on May 21 and “Macbeth” on May 22.

The actors have been preparing for the past eight months, under the direction of the Marin Shakespeare Company’s Lesley Currier and Suraya Keating.

The original play was written by the inmate group Veterans Healing Veterans. It is an autobiographical play about why many veterans commit suicide and what can be done about it.

Along with fellow inmates, the audience for the original play will also include outside veteran guests. It will be followed by a discussion moderated by leaders of Veterans Healing Veterans.
