San Quentin inmate who escaped has been arrested in Paso Robles

San Rafael Police have confirmed that the inmate who escaped San Quentin State Prison on Wednesday has been arrested on Saturday afternoon in Paso Robles at a Taco Bell.

Around 12:30 p.m. 21-year-old Shalom Mendoza was taken into custody by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Office of Correction Safety.

A woman reportedly saw Mendoza at a Taco Bell when she contacted authorities.

Officials then took Mendoza into custody without incident.

Around 4:20 p.m. on Friday, Mendoza was reportedly seen at a Dollar Store in San Miguel.

Investigators believe that Mendoza was heading towards Los Angeles.

Officials say that Mendoza had purchased dark clothing and is not wearing his prison uniform.

Mendoza was reported missing around 9:35 p.m. on Wednesday during an institutional count.

Authorities say he was assigned to work outside of the secured perimeter where he took advantage of the opportunity.

San Rafael Police have also confirmed that Mendoza carjacked a woman in Home Depot parking lot close to the prison.

The car Mendoza reportedly took is a Toyota Rav4 with a California license plate number 6STZ502.

On Friday, a vehicle that matches this description was abandoned and found off the 101 Freeway north of Paso Robles.

Mendoza is described as a Hispanic man with short brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 177-pounds.

Since 1977, the CDCR says that 99-percent of offenders who have left without permission from an adult institution, camp or community-based program has been apprehended.
