SAN MATEO COUNTY (KRON) — Hundreds of union employees walked off the job in San Mateo County today.
Human services workers say they have been unable to reach a contract agreement with the county– and they are now walking the picket lines on a two-day strike.
They are asking for a new contract with the county. These workers say being out on strike has had an impact on services in the county, mainly the health division.
The county has said that it may need to centralize services during the strike and close some of the smaller offices. Workers are striking in hopes of securing a new contract.
Ten other unions have recently reached agreements with the county but this union has not.
Members of the union say they had many proposals that the county wasn’t able to accommodate — like caseload standards, worker to supervisor ratios and voluntary time off.
Workers say what they’re asking for are basic working standards. It’s unclear when the union and county will return to negotiations.
