SANTA CLARA COUNTY (KRON) — Thousands of people in need will be able to have a Thanksgiving meal thanks to the work of Sacred Heart.

The organization is preparing 4,200 holiday food boxes and they are being distributed to anyone that wants them and lived in Santa Clara County.

KRON4’s Camila Bernal was there as they handed out hundreds of these boxes.

Ruth Mendiola waited patiently in a line that wrapped around the offices of Sacred Heart.

“We come here all the time for food,” Mendiola said. “I’m here like twice a month.”

As a member of Sacred Heart, she’s getting both food and clothing.

“Helps me tremendously,” she told Bernal. “Helps me way tremendously gives us so much potatoes so much fruits and vegetables, we are homeless so basically, we have nothing so it helps us tremendously.”

Sacred Heart has been doing this since 1964 drawing thousands like Ruth year after year.

“You get a whole food box, so you get like a 40-pound food box with all the fixes in there everything you need for a Thanksgiving dinner for a good number of people,” Sacred Heart’s Efrain Segundo explained.

Volunteers pack the food in assembly lines while others stop by to drop off donations

“I have a lot of kid’s clothes and adult clothes and baby stuff so I know it’s getting cold and it would help,” said Venessa Toa, who was dropping off donations.

This year, Sacred Heart is in need of turkeys as they are still about 2,000 turkeys short of their goal of 4,200. It is also accepting cash donations, money that would be used to buy more turkeys.

The distribution will go on until Wednesday so there’s still plenty of time for donations, especially because they are not turning anybody away who comes here in search of food.
