A Vietnam War memorial was vandalized in downtown San Jose this weekend.
People noticed white paint dripping on the front, left corner sometime after Saturday night.
A board member with the San Jose Vietnam War Memorial Foundation responsible for that monument tells KRON4 that he is beside himself after seeing this sign of disrespect for the veterans who gave up their lives on the front lines.
One-hundred-and-forty-two veterans’ names are inscribed on that memorial that was dedicated five years ago–all of which were from San Jose.
The board member tells KRON4 they were concerned about the location right along the sidewalk on Santa Clara Street and so close to the SAP Center. But that was the point–for people walking and driving by to see the honorary display and pay respect.
Instead this weekend, someone spray-painted some illegible writing on the corner with white paint that although has been washed off is still etched in the granite.
The group who privately funded this monument plans to bring out a granite expert to try their best to restore it.
This comes right at the heels of the death of Arizona senator and Vietnam War veteran John McCain, but it isn’t clear the motive for this tagging.
