SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – An official says San Jose State University police officer was assaulted and briefly hospitalized after being assaulted by an alleged gang member.

University spokeswoman Pat Harris tells the Mercury News the officer was taken Monday night to Valley Medical Center, treated, and released.

Harris says the 23-year-old man suspected of assaulting the officer was hit with a stun gun and taken to a hospital, where he remained Tuesday morning.

Harris say two campus police officers were on patrol when they became aware of an altercation between a group of San Jose State University students and another group not associated with the university.

She says that when one of the officers was caught off-guard and assaulted.
