SAN JOSE (KRON) — San Jose police will hold a memorial service Tuesday at SAP Center to remember one of their officers who died in a collision last week.
The 11 a.m. program for Officer Michael Katherman, who was struck and killed by a minivan while on patrol June 14, will be preceded by a motorcade.
The procession will begin at 9:45 a.m. from the Darling & Fischer Chapel of the Hills funeral home in Los Gatos and continue along Winchester Boulevard into Campbell, police said.
The route will make a right turn to Steven Creek Boulevard, which becomes West San Carlos Street, and heads north towards the arena, according to police.
The service is estimated to last about two hours. It will be followed by a motorcade through Interstate Highway 280 and U.S. Highway 101 to a cemetery in Gilroy for a private burial, police said.
On June 14 just before 4:30 p.m., Katherman was on duty driving a police motorcycle up North 10th Street, where he was hit by a southbound silver minivan that attempted to make a left turn to Horning Street, police said.
Katherman, 34, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.
Katherman left behind his wife, April, and two children.
Large crowds are expected to attend Tuesday’s service and everyone attending will be expected to follow “standard security procedures,” according to police.
The public is advised to take public transportation due to traffic and limited parking in the area, police said.
The police department is coordinating with other law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County and the California Highway Patrol to respond to calls for service and patrol the city.
