San Jose police investigate fatal hit-and-run

SAN JOSE (KRON) — Police Friday morning have shut down a major roadway due to an active investigation into a fatal hit-and-run in Downtown San Jose.

The incident happened at about 4:51 a.m. near Santa Clara and Delmas streets near the SAP Center.

Officers responded to the area on a report of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle.

Upon arrival officers located an adult male on the ground suffering from serious injuries. Medical personnel arrived on scene and pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene a short time later, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was riding his bicycle on a sidewalk along Santa Clara St. when he was struck. Police say that a truck, heading in the opposite direction, crossed all lanes, jumped the curb and struck the victim.

The driver stopped, reversed the truck and ran over the victim.

The truck fled the scene heading southbound on Delmas Avenue, police said. The suspect vehicle was described as an early 90’s White full size pick-up truck with front driver side damage.

There is no description of the driver at this time.

Lanes in both directions have been closed between Highway 87 off-ramp and Autumn Street.

Motorist are urged to find alternatives routes in and out of the area.

The identity of the victim is not being released until the Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity and next of kin have been notified.
